Steam is an online game vending site created by Valve, developers of Half Life, Counter Strike, Portal, Team Fortress 2, etc to sell their games online. They then expanded that store to include games sold by other developers from AAA to small independents. Some games are Free to Play, Free, and others you pay for. Some games go on steep discounts at times.

Steam logins are free to create. With it you can browse the Steam store, add friends in a Contact List, for chats and voice chat. you can create or join Steam groups and clans as well.

Quake Live via Steam is the same Quake Live network we used to play via browser plug-ins and now the Windows stand-alone launcher. I would make a bogus Steam account first, and see if Quake Live will run on the Mac. Don't link your existing account. If it runs, then make a Steam account you will keep and link your account to it. Once you link your existing QL account to Steam, you can only play the game via Steam.

check it out and good luck!
