Newbz Guide to Quake Live Instagib

Welcome to Quake Live I hope you enjoy your time here :) Lots of new players get frustrated when they die over and over and they can't tell how people do this. I will explain the basics of Instagib to speed your way through the ranks of Quake Live.

Hope you find this guide useful. This guide comes from an Instagib Tier 3 player. Right there I'm not a champ and I don't have much experience with the full range of weapons.

Aiming
Moving your mouse around. Very basic in concept yet perhaps the most difficult aspect of getting that little dot on your opponent before you fire. Stay calm and collected. Freaking and spazzing will pay no dividends here.
Make use of left/right step. The crosshairs are nearly on your target but not quite. Take a little sidestep and BAM! One more kill under your belt.

The Importance of Sound and Listening. Defense / Not getting Killed / Improving KDR
Sound is very important in this game. If you're not paying attention to the sounds around you, expect to lose a lot and have a negative KDR

Can't move from your spawn? Getting spawn killed? Not a whole lot you can do about that but you can have revenge. Players can hear you spawn in. They immediately turn towards the sound and fire. You can do it too. Players usually spawn at the nearest spawn point to their point of death. You can use this knowledge to your advantage by getting a kill and immediately turning towards the nearest spawn point. This is application of map knowledge. Keep your ears open. They may spawn elsewhere. Stay alert and act fast.

Listening
By default, Quake Live forces enemy players to bright green Keel. A big model with a color that is easy to see on most maps. Along with that goes Keel's sounds. He has the same sounds as a couple other models but the default is Keel. You will hear Keel's footsteps to your left or right. Not sure if the QL sound engine supports up or down. I use stereo headphones. Not 5.1 or 7.1 surround. Hear his steps? face yourself towards them.

You can hear the hum of another railgun, left or right. Face the hum of the rail. You can hear the gun fire. Face that sound.
Walls do not absorb or deflect sound. You can hear straight through them at any angle. Face that sound. This will get you pre-aimed at your target so you can fire the moment you see a green pixel.
Before your turn that corner, : Stop, Listen. Wave your mouse around. Hear anything? If not, proceed. If you do hear anything, you know which way to face. Good luck.

At the bottom of a jump pad? Think twice about getting on it. People can hear you approach and are waiting to hear it spring as their queue to fire. Proceed the same as going around a corner. Stop, Listen. hear anything? if not, jump. If you do, make sure you are aimed parallel to the next floor and be pre-aimed. Your opponent is sitting up there, crouched and waiting for you. Or don't take the jump at all. Fight from the bottom.

You can hear better without your rail out. Use this judiciously as you will need a moment to draw your weapon. This will allow you to hear other players. If everyone does this it turns into a stalker/camper's game.
You can hold to walk (move slower) so you can't be heard. Try this with your gaunt out. You will be silent.

Strafe Jumping
Good way to get around the map faster than just hitting W (forward). There are tutorials for this in the Quake Live Training Center. There are demonstrations available on youtube.

All Weapons Matches
Each weapon has a particular use. Get to know them. Learn combos. They will not be covered in detail here.

Item Management and Map Control
Know your way around the map. Know where the good items spawn. Grab them before your opponent does.
Hope this helps ease your entry into Quake Live and Instagib good luck!
